ASCENT FOUNTAIN

THE GARDEN AT VANDERLAAN FIELD

Nicollet Commons Park (2004)

HOMAGE

This garden was meant to expand the presence of the late Rich VanderLaan at his namesake field in Alimagnet Park. It includes a paver walkway and patio in the form of a baseball with stitches, a variety of colorful perennial ground covers and a bronze sculpture of a young baseball player entitled "Sand lot"  to memorialize VanderLaan's lifetime dedication to youth and baseball.  VanderLaan, a long-time community volunteer, active member of the Burnsville Community Foundation and founder of Baseball Association 191 (BA 191), was known by many as Burnsville's "Mr. Baseball." Throughout his lifetime, he was dedicated to raising money for young people who couldn't afford to play the game.  (2014)

CENTRIFUGE

"Ascent Fountain honors service to community.  It speaks to the accomplishment of goals, as well as the motivating and mentoring or others.  The soaring eagles symbolize the synergies that lift and encourage the aspirations of others. The lone eagle represents the difference one person can make by mentoring, encouraging and motivating others with dedicated service to family, community and nation.  Ken, by his exemplary achievements in all of these areas, was the inspiration for Ascent Fountain."
